Lash Lift or Lash Extensions – Which Works for You?
For those who are looking to improve the appearance of their eyes, understanding the differences between lash lift and lash extensions is quite important. At Blink Lashes, we provide both the lash lift and eyelash extensions as part of our wide range of services. If you are considering either one, then you should know the basics before you make the decision.
First things first, a lash lift and eyelash extensions are two different things. Although they both deal with eyelashes, they are two different approaches. What follows is an explanation of what they do and their differences so you can make the best-informed decision.
What is a Lash Lift?
A lash lift is an enhancement of your natural lashes that does not add fibres or additional materials. Instead, a chemical process is used to shape the lashes and infuse them with keratin. This process can be combined with a tint to alter their colour, though most people choose to use jet black. The result is a lifted or curled look to your eyelashes.
The results will depend in large part on the condition of your natural lashes. But the results will have your lashes looking longer, fuller, and richer with the colour of your choice.
What are Eyelash Extensions?
Similar to hair extensions, these are synthetic fibres made with a mink or silk finish that are attached to you eyelashes. The goal is to make your eyelashes look longer, thicker, and fuller through the use of additional synthetic material that has a natural look. If you have short, sparse, or very fine lashes, then you may want to investigate whether eyelash extensions are for you.
At Blink Lashes, we offer a line of synthetic fibres with no animal products involved that can enhance the look of your eyelashes. We also have a wide range of techniques in applying the extensions to create greater volume and even curls that can augment your appearance.
Lash Lift or Lash Extensions (The differences)
Although both processes help augment your eyelashes, they each have their own effect. This will help you choose the one that works best for the look you want to achieve.
Dramatic: By far eyelash extensions are considerably more dramatic and noticeable in appearance compared to the lash lift. If you are looking to really draw attention to your eyes, then this is the process to consider. It works especially well when trying to achieve a cat’s eye or doll eye effect.
Lifts are limited by the natural lashes that you have. So, achieving a cat’s eye appearance with lifts is not really possible. The lashes can be made darker and even curled a bit, but they do not achieve the doll eye appearance that extensions can provide.
Length: Another limitation to lash lifts is that they cannot lengthen your eyelashes like extensions can. While the lash lift can curl them upwards and customize their appearance based on the length of your lashes, the lift cannot be used to style your lashes in the same manner as eyelash extensions.
If you are looking to add length to your eyelashes, then extensions are the answer. This is the obvious choice.
Maintenance: While eyelash extensions have their advantages, they are also more difficult to maintain compared to the lash lift. You can expect the lift to last up to six weeks in some cases, five weeks in others depending on the condition of your eyelashes. However, eyelash extensions can only last about three weeks.
Plus, once the lifts have set for 24 hours, you can put on and take off makeup, mascara, and the like without worrying about causing damage. This is because your eyelashes are still natural and strong, so you can afford to put in some elbow grease to take off makeup.
Eyelash extensions however are far more delicate. You need to avoid oily remover or makeup products and especially sticky substances such as gel pot eyeliner. If you have used the extensions to increase the volume of your lashes, then mascara is a big no-no as well. This means that maintenance is far easier for the lash lift compared to the extensions.
Health: Although this may sound counter-intuitive at first, lash extensions when applied by a professional is better for the health of your lashes. This is because they sit atop the lashes which have not been altered or changed due to chemicals unlike the lash lifts. Even if the extensions are used for years at a time, once removed the natural eyelashes remain just as healthy.
Considerations
The differences between lash lift and eyelash extensions go to the natural lashes themselves. They are permanent in nature which means that they will last until your lashes grow too long or fall out on their own. If you are looking for perfect lashes all the time, the extensions have the advantage.
If you have weak lashes, the lash lift may dry them out and make your natural lashes even more brittle. This leads to more breakage which in turn means that you may have to stop getting lifts for your lashes until they can grow back properly.
If the lash lift is something you have performed frequently, it is advisable that you use a good after product that keeps the lashes strong and healthy. Products that use keratin and other nutrients can help keep the lashes strong.
It is also possible that you might have an allergic reaction to the eyelash extensions. This is relatively rare, but there’s no way to know if it will happen until a patch test is performed. If you have had allergic reactions to eye makeup, tints, or dyes before, then chances are you may be allergic to the extensions as well.
There are many possibilities when you consider the lash lift or lash extensions. Getting the best advice includes all the options available and the awareness that in a small number of cases it may not work for you.
